The Hmar people are an indigenous tribe from India's Northeast, primarily found in the states of Mizoram, Manipur, Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya. Their origin is often traced back to Sinlung, a legendary ancestral homeland believed to be located somewhere in China, though its exact location remains uncertain. The Hmars, like many indigenous communities, preserve their history through oral traditions, making it challenging to differentiate between myth, legend, and historical reality. The documentation of their oral traditions in written form began only about a century ago, following the introduction of modern education by Christian missionaries during the British colonial period.
